The temple across the street

There’s a lot of history to be found in our own backyards. Take Mound Place, for example, a tiny street paved with pink cement in one of St. Petersburg, Florida’s oldest neighborhoods, Pinellas Point.

Behind an unassuming fence right off of Mound Place sits a temple mound left by the Tocobaga people, who lived in the Tampa Bay region between 800 and 1500 A.D.

This is a story about where the mound came from, what happened to the people who built it, and who is trying to restore it to its pre-Columbian state.

You can get started here.
